FAQ

1 General

1.1 Where are you located?

We are a Canadian company with two locations in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada.

In St. Boniface we are located at Unit 100, Provencher Blvd.

In Southwest Winnipeg we are located at Unit J 1765 Kenaston Blvd.

1.2 Do I need an appointment?

Appointments for bra fittings are not necessary, but we do offer appointments if preferred and can set aside a specific time for you.

We do recommend appointments for mastectomy clients so we can prepare the necessary information for the Manitoba Breast Prosthesis program.

1.3 How much does a bra cost?

Our bras range from $60.00 to $210.00, and swimwear ranges from $80 to $310. We try our best to offer quality merchandise at various price points to accommodate different budgets.

1.4 What bra sizes do you carry?

Our bra selection offers sizes from A to L cups and bands sizes from 30”-50”. When necessary we will order in additional sizes.

1.6 Do you carry post-surgical bras?

Yes, we have styles suitable for after breast reduction, breast augmentation,  mastectomy and lumpectomy surgeries. We suggest asking your doctor for any specific criteria, and one of our experienced bra fitters will help you find a suitable option.

1.7 What sizes do you offer in swimwear?

We are proud to offer a wide variety of sizes and provide plus sized options. Our cup-sized swimwear ranges from D-J cups and band sizes between 30 and 42.

1.8 Are your stores wheelchair accessible?

Yes, both of our locations are on the ground level with no stairs.

1.9 What is the best way to care for my recent purchase?

Taking proper care of your new purchase will ensure the longest life of the garment. We recommend following the washing suggestions on the manufacturer’s tag.

In most cases, this means hand washing all bras using a delicate wash and hanging or laying flat to dry. Molded cups should be stored flat or hung to prevent dents in the foam cups.

Swimwear should be hand washed using swimwear wash and hung to dry. It is very important to use swim wash that is formulated to remove salt, chlorine and oil from sunscreen, while still being gentle enough on the fabric. We recommend Splash Swimwear wash and have this product available in store and online. In the event that it cannot be washed, swimwear should at least be rinsed with cold water soon after use in chlorinated or salt water.

2 Bra Fitting

2.1 Is there a charge for a bra fitting?

No, bra fittings are complimentary and are part of the service we offer.

2.2 What can I expect during my bra fitting?

We find that measuring a woman to determine her bra size isn’t the best method. This is due to the fact that you have to be wearing a bra that fits properly to get an accurate bust measurement. Measuring is also further complicated because it doesn’t take a woman’s breast shape into consideration and every bra fits differently.

Rather than measuring, our bra fitters will bring you a bra to try on; often using the size you are presently wearing as a starting point. Once you have the bra on, we will explain what we look for to ensure a good fit and adjust the size accordingly.

Our bra fitters have experience with many different body types and know the advantages of different brands and bra styles. We will bring you options based on your size and preferences and ensure you find a bra that fits and feels fabulous!

2.3 Why do so many women wear the wrong bra size?

Most women have never been fitted properly and also might not have a clear understanding of the concept of bra sizing. Others might not realize their size has changed with fluctuations in their weight or hormones.

Many large scale department stores and lingerie stores only carry the "most popular" sizes. It can be difficult to find the size you should be wearing, so many women end up settling for what they can find.

2.4 How often should I be fit for a bra?

Every time you purchase a bra we recommend trying it on. Hormone changes and small fluctuations in weight can affect breast size, shape and density. It's always best to have the fit checked by one of our expert fitters when possible.

3 Nursing Bras

3.1 When should I purchase a nursing bra?

We often get asked when the best time to get fitted for a nursing bra is. Since a woman's breast changes significantly during pregnancy, we recommend waiting as close to your due date to come in for a nursing bra.

We have a few nursing bra styles that are designed to accommodate changes in breast size that work well for both maternity and nursing once baby arrives.

Once milk production has started many women find their breast size can change significantly. For this reason we recommend getting fitted for a more structured and/or wired nursing bra only after your breast milk has come in.

3.2 What nursing bra brands do you carry?

We carry nursing bras from Bravado, Royce, Cake Lingerie, and Elomi. Our nursing bra selection can be viewed online here

4 Mastectomy

4.1 Do you offer mastectomy products?

Yes, we offer a full range of breast prostheses (breast forms), post-surgical bras, pocketed bras and swimwear, as well as swim forms. We are also an accredited vendor for Cancer Care Manitoba's Breast Prosthesis program.

4.2 Do I need an appointment for a mastectomy fitting?

As always, we welcome walk-ins but do prefer appointments for mastectomy fittings. This allows us to review the Cancer Care breast prosthesis program prior to your fitting and submit your application for pre-approval. An appointment also ensures one of our certified Mastectomy fitters are available to help you at your preferred time.

4.3 What is the price range for your mastectomy products?

Silicone breast forms range from $360.00 to $400.00, and partial silicone breast forms range $220 to $260. Mastectomy bras range from $70.00 to $120.00.

If you have private insurance, you may have additional coverage. Please contact your insurance provider for more information. Please note that we are not able to direct bill your insurance provider.

4.4 Do you carry mastectomy swimwear?

Yes, we carry swimwear styles with pockets to support breast prostheses.  We also offer an alteration service which allows us to add a pocket a swimsuit purchased at one of our locations.

5 Plus-Size Bathing Suits

5.1 What Type of Swimsuit Is the Most Flattering for Plus Sizes?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question because plus-size is just a size. It doesn't describe your unique body type, define your style, or have any bearing on your personal preferences. That's why, at The BraBar, we offer personalized fittings that allow you to try on multiple swimsuit options and choose the one(s) that flatter your unique shape the most. Our diverse selection of plus-size, cup-sized swimwear provides proper bust support that elongates the body and minimizes the silhouette.

5.2 What Type of Swimwear Is Best to Minimize the Midsection?

Finding the right bathing suit is all about discovering the style that fits you perfectly and makes you feel confident. A one-piece or tankini with ruching and/or a patterned fabric often offers a flattering fit, while an A-line tankini style that flows away from the body under the bust can prevent fabric from clinging to the midsection and camouflage a rounder shape. We also carry a selection of plus-sized tankinis and one-piece bathing suits designed to minimize the midsection with a built-in layer that helps to smooth the area. When it comes to two-piece swimwear, many plus-size women opt for high-waist styles that provide more coverage in the midsection while accentuating curves in other areas.
